Teacher-made tests

These are tests made by teachers for use in their own classes, or throughout their school. Often these tests are for the purposes of formative or diagnostic assessment, or are used in a summative manner for junior classes.

Advantages

  • May be more likely to incorporate cultural perspectives than standardised tests.
  • Can give more opportunities for higher-level reasoning than some standardised tests.
  • Objective measure of achievement.

Disadvantages

  • Does not measure potential.
  • May have a low ceiling i.e. too many students achieving highly to distinguish between them.
  • May not allow for cultural diversity.
